AFSCME Local 60 - Municipal & School District Employees of Dane County

Local 60 Madison Schools Report

Favian’s Report:

Wow! What a month it’s been since our election as your two new VP’s. Richard Nelson and I have been busy getting up to speed with a labor/management meeting, two union meetings, a WRS presentation and we sat in on two BOE meetings. Then there was the Recall Walker rally on St. Patty’s Day at the Capitol, not to mention wrapping up Stewards training and sitting in on Public employees pension informational meetings. Whew, I’m exhausted just talking about it.

After the poor turnout for our Madison Schools Union meeting we decided that we had to do something to change this by reaching out to our co-workers. I started at West and I was able to meet the new co-workers, sign up new hires for membership, share AFSCME’s election endorsements and answer questions regarding everything from t-shirts to our Contract. I received some really good feedback and look forward to holding more of these informal sessions in the feeder schools soon!

Richard’s Report

As your Union Rep’s we recognize the importance of having a greater presence in the workplace. In the coming weeks and months we will be going into the schools to meet with you and talk with you personally about any issues or problems you may be having and to try and answer any questions you may have. In addition, we will be holding Union orientation sessions for all new and recent hiree’s (and any other interested members). As we look forward to meeting with you, it is our sincere hope that by reaching out to you we can come to better understand some of the problems and concerns you deal with daily.

In the coming issues of the Local 60 Newsletter you will notice some changes in the Madison Schools Report. As your VP’s we will be assuming a larger role in its publication. In future issues your VP’s will be reporting back to you about what’s going on in our schools, listing of important upcoming events and keeping you informed about hot-button issues and other related Union activities. For all of us Public Employees the road ahead is going to be a long, hard ride so buckle yourself in and be prepared for the struggle ahead. Get informed, get educated, get involved. If you do nothing, nothing will happen to change things. You are the Union!

We welcome your feedback and suggestions. Please address your comments to Richard Nelson at .

Yours in Solidarity, Favian McMurray and Richard Nelson
